CDFI Annual Survey

Inside Out research report

Every year we publish Inside Out: The state of community development finance based on our annual survey of members.

It’s the only publication to provide data and commentary on what’s really happening in the CDFI sector. If you want to know where CDFIs are, who they serve, what products they offer and where they get their money from Inside Out can tell you.

Inside Out 2010

The latest report, based on a 94% response rate, gives a comprehensive picture of the sector’s performance for the period April 2009 to March 2010. Key findings include:

• CDFIs lent a record £200m, up 77% from the previous reporting period
• The value of CDFI loan applications rose to £437m (from £360m previously)
• The CDFI loan portfolio stood at £531m as of March 2010
• CDFIs helped their customers leverage an additional £100m from other mainstream sources
• Earned income accounted for 40% of all income reported, up 14% from the previous period.

CDFIs continue to provide critical finance despite a turbulent economic and political landscape. Business lending has shown continued steady growth, with civil society and personal lending CDFIs also registering record years for lending activity. Balancing the need for even more community finance with public funding cuts will be a major challenge in the coming months and years.

Inside Out 2010 stands alongside GHK’s evaluation of the sector as a strong message to government that CDFIs continue to redress market failure as proven and efficient delivery mechanisms. This year’s Inside Out contains more data than ever on sustainability, income streams, lending activity, performance and outcomes.
