The State of Community Development Finance

Inside Out is the only publication to provide data and commentary on what’s really happening in community development finance. If you want to know where CDFIs are, who they serve, what products they offer and where they get their money from Inside Out can tell you.

A variety of stakeholders including funders, supporters and investors use this report. The report can help you to understand key aspects of CDFI operations and performance and some of the differences across different markets, size and age of institutions.

Our latest report, based on a 93% response rate, gives a comprehensive picture of the sector’s performance and outputs as the recession took hold in Britain.

Key findings are:

  • CDFIs lent a record £113m in 2009, up 50% from the previous year
  • the value of CDFI loan applications rose to £360m in 2009 (from £160m in 2008)
  • the CDFI loan portfolio stands at £394m
  • banks have overtaken the regional development agencies as the main source of funds for on-lending
  • CDFIs report a write-off rate of 13%, but many believe this will rise over the next year as the impact of the recession becomes apparent.
