Money for ChangeMoney for Change is the annual cdfa conference and has gained the reputation as the UK’s premier event in the community development finance field. Money for Change 08: Evolution or Revolution? took place this year on 25-27 June in Leeds. Joining cdfa members at this year’s event were leaders from business, government and the third sector who came together to discuss not only the compelling theme — evolution or revolution: Can CDFIs evolve naturally or do we need a revolution in thought and practice? — but also a range of other vital and gripping topics, from the consequences of the credit crunch, community development finance sustainability, the role of banks and of government, and more. Quotable quotes: “We want to see fair finance, where people are put before profit. To develop this, we are supporting increased growth in the third financial sector. This means we encourage high performing CDFIs to look at ways of extending their reach, offer banking services, promote safe saving and offer basic insurance products. “CDFIs complement mainstream banks – you serve a different part of the market – or serve it in a different way. Now, not all mainstream lenders know this or understand what CDFIs are all about. Banks must understand that there’s more than just a social imperative to the CDFI sector, there’s a business imperative too.” “The time has come for a change in the way in which we deliver alternatives to high cost and exploitative finance. We know CDFIs are a resilient, effective way to respond to finance needs for members of some of our most vulnerable communities. Professionalising and developing the sector means we are here to stay. We can not afford the distraction and destruction of a revolution. We must develop and deliver our services on a smooth trajectory of evolution.”
