From unemployment to self-employment
It’s not a dog’s life for young entrepreneur
Philip Stratford was unemployed, an ex-offender and had struggled with long term illness. He also had a passion for animals, and had built up experience raising and training dogs through volunteering at local kennels. Philip, who is 21, found his friends and family were constantly ringing him for advice on their pets.
Spotting a potential market gap he decided to look into opening a business helping people with their pets.
Philip approached Northern Pinetree Trust (NPT) for help. After receiving business coaching to develop his idea and knowledge around running a business NPT suggested he consider a Start-Up Loan.
The loan application was successful and Philip received £2,000 for working capital, equipment, marketing and insurance.
Bow Wows was born. A business offering dog walking, pet sitting, 24/7 pet transport, behavioural advice and puppy socialising.
Philip said of the help he got from NPT, “A great service, brilliant people and I really appreciate the support, helping me get started.”
NPT helps people with disabilities, a long term illness or from disadvantaged communities to move into self-employment. They operate in the north east of England and are part of the CDFA consortium delivering Start-Up Loans.
